Q: What is the significance of the joint in a pool cue?

A: The joint is where the shaft of the cue connects to the butt, and it plays a crucial role in cue performance. Higher-priced cues often feature precision-engineered joints that provide a secure connection and minimize deflection, allowing for more accurate shots.  Many players tend to heavily favor one joint over another, for instance Uni-Loc is a great quick release joint that allows for quick and easy setup and breakdown of equipment, however Radial joints tend to feel more like a solid 1 piece cue and have a better feel to the hit.  It is all preference, however it is something to keep in mind – replacing a shaft (for instance upgrading to a Predator Z shaft or 314, or maybe a Carbon Fiber shaft) can become difficult if you get a cue with a rare joint; the most common joints tend to be Uni-Loc, Radial, 3/8×10, and 5/16×18.  All of our cues have the joint type in the description or additional details.

Phenolic tips are extremely hard and offer excellent cue ball control but require precise striking. The hardness / softness of leather tips are also quite important for control – the softer the tip, the more control / spin you will be able to achieve, however soft tips will need to be replaced more often and definitely should not be used to break with.

Q: Do I really need a break cue? Does it make that big of a difference?

A: This is a VERY common question with new players or first time cue buyers – The answer is a definite yes.  Break cues have totally different technology than shooting cues – they tend to have 13mm tips, harder materials for shafts, and the tips / ferrules are made out of harder material than playing cues.  Not only will it save your tip on your shooting cue (especially if you choose a soft tip!), but it will immensely improve your breaks.
