Pool Cue Purchasing Guide

Common questions when purchasing Pool Cues:

Q: What are the key differences between pool cues in the $100 to $1000 price range?

A: Pool cues in this price range differ significantly in terms of materials, craftsmanship, and performance. Here’s a breakdown:

Q: What types of materials are commonly used in pool cues?

A: Pool cues can be made from a variety of materials, including wood, fiberglass, carbon fiber, and composite materials. Wood, particularly maple, is a popular choice due to its natural feel and responsiveness.

Q: How does the quality of materials affect the performance of a pool cue?

A: Higher-quality materials often result in better performance and durability. For example, cues made from high-grade maple tend to provide a more consistent hit and greater control over the cue ball compared to cues made from lower-quality woods or composites.

Q: Are more expensive pool cues more durable?

A: Generally, yes. Higher-priced cues are often crafted with greater attention to detail and with more durable materials, resulting in a cue that can withstand years of use without losing its performance or structural integrity.

Q: What is the significance of the joint in a pool cue?

A: The joint is where the shaft of the cue connects to the butt, and it plays a crucial role in cue performance. Higher-priced cues often feature precision-engineered joints that provide a secure connection and minimize deflection, allowing for more accurate shots.  Many players tend to heavily favor one joint over another, for instance Uni-Loc is a great quick release joint that allows for quick and easy setup and breakdown of equipment, however Radial joints tend to feel more like a solid 1 piece cue and have a better feel to the hit.  It is all preference, however it is something to keep in mind – replacing a shaft (for instance upgrading to a Predator Z shaft or 314, or maybe a Carbon Fiber shaft) can become difficult if you get a cue with a rare joint; the most common joints tend to be Uni-Loc, Radial, 3/8×10, and 5/16×18.  All of our cues have the joint type in the description or additional details.

Q: What types of wraps are available on pool cues?

A: Common wrap materials include leather, Irish linen, rubber, and snake skin. Higher-priced cues often feature premium wraps such as leather or high-quality linen, which provide a comfortable grip and enhanced control over the cue.

Q: How does the size of the cue tip affect performance?

A: Cue tip size can influence cue ball control and spin. Smaller tips (e.g., 11-12mm) provide greater precision for precise shots, while larger tips (e.g., 13-14mm) allow for more power and spin. Tip size preference varies among players and playing styles.

Q: Are there differences in cue tip materials?

A: Yes, cue tips are commonly made from leather, phenolic, or layered materials. Leather tips are the most common and provide a good balance of control and spin. Phenolic tips are extremely hard and offer excellent cue ball control but require precise striking. Layered tips combine the benefits of both leather and phenolic, offering durability and consistent performance. The hardness / softness of leather tips are also quite important for control – the softer the tip, the more control / spin you will be able to achieve, however soft tips will need to be replaced more often and definitely should not be used to break with.

Q: How do I choose the right pool cue for me within my budget?

A: Consider your playing style, preferences, and budget when choosing a pool cue. If you’re a casual player, a mid-range cue in the $100-$300 range may suffice. For serious players or those looking for premium craftsmanship and performance, investing in a cue in the $300-$1000 range may be worthwhile.

Q: Do I really need a break cue? Does it make that big of a difference?

A: This is a VERY common question with new players or first time cue buyers – The answer is a definite yes.  Break cues have totally different technology than shooting cues – they tend to have 13mm tips, harder materials for shafts, and the tips / ferrules are made out of harder material than playing cues.  Not only will it save your tip on your shooting cue (especially if you choose a soft tip!), but it will immensely improve your breaks.
