Clubs is the most architectural of the four suits – three lobes balanced on a stem – and it’s the one that asks the most of an inlay artist. On the MEG03 Clubs, each cocobolo point holds an aluminum trefoil cleanly cut so the negative space between the lobes reads as sharply as the metal itself. Against the ebony forearm, the clubs sit with a kind of structured, deliberate symmetry that the other suits don’t quite share. The cocobolo butt sleeve repeats the club between ivory and silver rings, with six cocobolo dice running through the middle to tie back to the Gambler theme.
Construction is Meucci’s standard for this series: 29″ solid maple PRO SHAFT, 12.5mm Ultra Skin Medium tip, 5/8″ fiber ferrule, 5/16×18 joint, black Irish linen wrap finished in urethane, and a changeable WBMEU weight bolt for tuning. The cue is made in Florence, South Carolina, alongside the rest of Meucci’s Gambler line and built to be played, not stored.
Clubs tends to find the player who wants the suit theme without the more obvious symbolism of Hearts or Spades – the bridge player, the cribbage player, the person whose card game has rules most pool players have never heard of. It also rounds out a four-suit collector set without competing visually with its siblings.
