FAQ

What pool accessories do I actually need?

Essential accessories: quality chalk (Kamui, Predator, or Blue Diamond), a shaft cleaner, and a tip shaper/scuffer. Recommended: billiard glove for consistent stroke, cue case for protection, and tip tool for maintenance. Nice to have: magnetic chalk holder, joint protectors, cue extension, and training balls. Start with chalk and basic tip maintenance tools - you'll discover other needs as you play more. Check our complete accessories collection for all options.

What chalk should I use?

Premium chalks like Kamui ($25-30), Predator Crest ($15), and Taom ($25) provide superior adhesion and last longer per application compared to standard Master chalk ($2-5). The investment in premium chalk is minimal but the reduction in miscues is significant. Kamui 0.98 offers softer application while 1.21 lasts longer between applications. For recreational players, Blue Diamond or Triangle chalk at $5-10 offers great value. Serious players should try premium chalk - the performance difference is noticeable.

Do I need a billiard glove?

Gloves create consistent friction between your bridge hand and shaft, eliminating variable humidity and sweat effects. They're especially helpful in humid environments, during long sessions, or for players with sweaty hands. Gloves aren't required - many professionals play without them. Try one to see if it improves your stroke consistency. Popular brands include Predator, Kamui, and Tiger. Gloves cost $15-30 and last months of regular use. See our billiard gloves selection.

What tip tools do I need?

Essential: tip scuffer/shaper to maintain rounded dome shape and chalk-grabbing texture. The Willard shaper, Cuetec Bowtie, or simple sandpaper discs work well. Multi-tools like the Cuetec Billiard Tool combine shaper, scuffer, and pick for convenience. Use before each session to ensure proper tip shape. Advanced: tip pik for deeper texture restoration. Avoid over-sanding which shortens tip life. Most tips need scuffing every few sessions and reshaping weekly for regular players.

How often should I chalk my cue?

Chalk before every shot - this is standard practice. Premium chalks may last 2-3 shots but the habit of chalking each time ensures consistent performance. Use a light twisting motion covering the entire tip surface - don't grind or over-apply. Excessive chalk creates mess without benefit. Before important shots (break, jump, masse), chalk thoroughly. The goal is uniform coverage without buildup. Premium chalk requires less per application than cheap chalk.

What is a cue extension and when do I need one?

Cue extensions screw into your cue's bumper, adding 6-12 inches of length for reaching distant shots. They're useful when the cue ball is far from the rail and you'd otherwise stretch awkwardly or use the mechanical bridge. Extensions maintain your normal stroke mechanics better than stretching. Serious players carry extensions for league and tournament play. Cost is $30-100 depending on quality. Verify your cue's bumper thread type before purchasing - 5/16x18 is most common.

Are training balls worth it?

Training balls like Jim Rempe Training Ball ($30-40) help you visualize cue ball spin and path. The marked patterns remain visible as the ball rotates, showing exactly how much english you applied. They're excellent learning tools for developing spin control and understanding cue ball physics. Once you've internalized these concepts, you may not need them regularly. For intermediate players working on spin shots, training balls accelerate skill development significantly.

What's the best way to clean my pool cue shaft?

Use a shaft cleaner like Q-Wiz or Cue Silk after each session to remove chalk and oils. Avoid household cleaners which can damage finish. Periodically burnish with shaft paper or leather to restore smoothness. For stubborn buildup, some players use Magic Eraser carefully. After cleaning, apply shaft conditioner to seal pores and maintain smoothness. Regular maintenance prevents sticky shafts and extends cue life. See our shaft maintenance products.

Do I need joint protectors?

Joint protectors cover exposed joint pins and sockets when your cue is disassembled, preventing damage to the threads and joint faces. They're useful if you transport cues without cases or leave them disassembled for storage. Most cases hold cues assembled, making protectors unnecessary. At $5-15 per set, they're inexpensive insurance if you need them. Protectors also prevent dirt and debris from entering joints. They're not essential but helpful for some players.

What's the difference between cheap and expensive chalk?

Cheap chalk ($1-5) like Master uses larger particles that don't adhere as well and require more frequent application. Premium chalk ($15-30) like Kamui uses ultra-fine particles for superior adhesion, longer-lasting coverage, and reduced miscues. Premium chalk also produces less dust, keeping tables cleaner. The annual cost difference is minimal ($20-50) but performance improvement is significant. For serious players, premium chalk is a small investment with noticeable benefits.
