FAQ

What makes McDermott G-Core shafts different from standard maple shafts?

G-Core shafts use a carbon fiber core wrapped in North American Hard Rock Maple, reducing deflection by up to 30% compared to traditional shafts. The carbon core provides exceptional straightness and eliminates warping issues common with solid maple. Players report more consistent aim with thin cuts and better cue ball control on power shots. G-Core shafts typically cost $250-400 as upgrades and are compatible with most McDermott cues from 2010 onward.

Are McDermott cues still made in Wisconsin?

Yes, all McDermott cues are manufactured in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin since 1975. Their 30,000 square-foot facility handles everything from wood selection to final assembly. This American manufacturing allows McDermott to maintain strict quality control and offer their lifetime warranty against warping or defects. Production cues ($200-500) and custom cues ($1,500+) all come from the same Wisconsin facility using the same craftsmanship standards.

How does the McDermott lifetime warranty work?

McDermott's lifetime warranty covers the original owner against warping and manufacturing defects for as long as you own the cue. If your shaft warps under normal playing conditions, McDermott will replace it free of charge. The warranty doesn't cover cosmetic damage, chalk marks, or abuse. To make a claim, contact McDermott with your cue's serial number and photos. Turnaround time is typically 2-4 weeks. This warranty applies to all McDermott cues purchased from authorized dealers.

What's the difference between McDermott's classic and modern designs?

McDermott's classic designs feature traditional Irish linen wraps, simple point patterns, and understated inlays, appealing to players who prefer timeless aesthetics. Modern designs incorporate bolder graphics, exotic wood combinations, and intricate inlay work with materials like abalone and turquoise. Classic cues typically start around $200-400, while modern designs with complex inlays range $600-1,500+. Performance-wise, both use identical construction methods and shaft options - the difference is purely cosmetic preference.

Can I upgrade my McDermott cue to a G-Core shaft later?

Yes, McDermott cues manufactured after 2010 use the Quick-Lock joint system, making them compatible with any McDermott shaft including G-Core. Simply unscrew your current shaft and thread on the G-Core replacement. Older McDermott cues with different joint types may require professional conversion or pin replacement. G-Core shafts retail for $250-400 depending on taper and diameter. Quarter King stocks multiple G-Core options and can help verify compatibility with your specific cue model.

What weight should I choose for my McDermott cue?

Most players choose 18.5-19.5 oz, which provides good balance between control and power. Lighter cues (18-18.5 oz) give faster stroke speed and better finesse for draw shots, preferred by players with slower natural strokes. Heavier cues (19.5-21 oz) deliver more power with less effort, ideal for break shots and players with quick strokes. McDermott allows weight customization in 0.5 oz increments. Order your preferred weight when purchasing, or add/remove weight bolts later if your cue has adjustable weight system.

How often should I clean my McDermott shaft?

Clean your McDermott shaft every 4-6 hours of play using a slightly damp cloth to remove chalk and hand oils. For deeper cleaning, use McDermott Shaft Cleaner or isopropyl alcohol monthly. Burnish the shaft with a leather pad or paper towel to close wood pores and maintain smoothness. Avoid over-cleaning, which can dry out the wood. G-Core shafts require less maintenance than solid maple due to their carbon core construction. Never use household cleaners or excessive moisture.

What's the price range for McDermott pool cues?

McDermott offers cues from $200 entry-level models up to $1,500+ for custom designs. The $200-400 range includes production cues with standard maple shafts and simple designs. The $500-900 range features exotic woods, intricate inlays, and upgraded shaft options. Premium customs above $1,000 include complex inlay work, rare materials, and full customization. All McDermott cues include the lifetime warranty regardless of price point. Higher prices reflect materials and craftsmanship, not performance - a $300 McDermott plays as well as a $1,200 model.

Are McDermott cues good for breaking?

McDermott offers dedicated break cues in their Stinger series ($150-250) designed specifically for power breaking. Standard playing cues can handle occasional breaks but aren't optimized for repeated impact. Break cues feature harder tips, reinforced ferrules, and heavier weights (19-21 oz) to maximize energy transfer. Using a separate break cue extends the life of your playing cue's tip and ferrule. Many serious players buy a McDermott playing cue and pair it with a Stinger break cue for best results.

What joint type do McDermott cues use?

McDermott uses their proprietary Quick-Lock joint system on all cues made after 2010, featuring a 5/16x14 stainless steel pin with quick-connect threading. This joint provides solid hit feedback and allows tool-free shaft changes. Older McDermott cues used various Uni-Loc and proprietary joints. The Quick-Lock system is compatible across all modern McDermott shafts, making upgrades and replacements simple. Joint protectors are included with all McDermott cues to prevent thread damage during storage and transport.
