The balls seem to wait for them, the angles stay friendly, and the cue ball never travels farther than it has to. None of that is luck. It is vertical axis control, the ability to make the cue ball stop dead, slide, draw back, or roll forward on command. Master those four responses and position play stops being a mystery.

The Tangent Line: The One Concept That Unlocks Everything

When the cue ball strikes an object ball with no rolling or backward spin at the moment of contact, it departs along the tangent line, a path at ninety degrees to the line the object ball travels. Follow bends the cue ball forward of that ninety degree line. Draw bends it backward. Pure stun holds it exactly on the line. Once you can predict and adjust that departure angle, you are no longer hoping the cue ball ends up somewhere useful. You are sending it there.

Stun: Riding the Tangent Line on Purpose

Stun is the stop shot’s travelling cousin. On an angled shot, that same sliding cue ball cannot stop, so it departs along the tangent line at a speed proportional to the cut angle. Stun shots are the most predictable position routes in pool because the path is fixed by geometry. Only the speed is up to you.

The stun run-through, where you hit slightly above pure stun to drift a foot or two forward of the tangent line, might be the single most-used position shot in professional nine ball. Small inputs, small movements, easy outs.

Drill: Tangent Line Prediction

Set up a half ball cut. Before shooting, place a piece of chalk on the rail where you believe the tangent line points. Shoot with pure stun and see how close the cue ball tracks to your prediction. Move the chalk, adjust, repeat. Ten shots a session builds a mental map you will use on every cut shot for the rest of your life.

Draw: Stop Yanking, Start Stroking

Draw is the shot every beginner wants and most learn wrong. Backspin comes from a clean, level, accelerating stroke through a tip position well below center. It does not come from jerking the cue back after contact, jacking the butt into the air, or muscling the ball. Those habits actually kill spin by robbing the tip of contact time.

Three checkpoints fix most draw problems. First, chalk every shot, because a miscue low on the ball is nearly guaranteed without it. Second, keep the cue as level as the rails allow. Third, finish your stroke with the tip out toward the spot where the cue ball sat, not snatched back toward your chest. Smooth acceleration beats raw speed every time.

The skill is in the bend. At slow speeds the cue ball bends forward almost immediately. At high speeds it holds the tangent line longer before the forward roll takes over. Drill: Three Speeds, One Shot

Set up the same half ball cut from the stun drill. Now shoot it with identical tip position, one tip above center, at three speeds: soft, medium, firm.
