Ask an intermediate player where the cue ball will end up after they pocket a ball and most of them guess. They know roughly. They have a feel for it. But they cannot draw the line on the cloth before they shoot, and that gap is the difference between a player who runs three balls and a player who runs the rack.
The good news is that cue ball path is not mysterious. It follows two geometric rules that hold up on every table, in every game, with any equipment. Learn them properly and you stop guessing.
The 90-Degree Rule: Where a Stun Shot Goes
When the cue ball strikes an object ball with no topspin and no backspin at the moment of contact, it leaves along a line exactly 90 degrees from the object ball’s path. That is the tangent line, and it is the foundation of everything else.
Here is how to see it. Imagine a straight line drawn from the center of the object ball through the point where the cue ball contacts it. That is the object ball’s direction of travel. Now draw a second line through the contact point at a right angle to the first. The cue ball travels down that second line.
The critical word above is stun. The 90-degree rule only applies when the cue ball is sliding at contact, meaning it has no forward or backward roll. On a short shot with a firm stroke and a center-ball hit, that is exactly what happens. On a long soft roll, the cue ball picks up natural forward roll before it arrives, and the rule no longer describes what you see.
This is why the stop shot is the first thing any serious instructor teaches. A stop shot is just a tangent line shot on a straight-in ball, where the tangent line runs sideways and the cue ball has nowhere to go.
What Draw and Follow Do to That Line
Follow and draw do not replace the tangent line. They bend the cue ball off it.
With follow, the cue ball starts down the tangent line and then curves forward, toward the object ball’s direction of travel. The more topspin and the thinner the hit, the more it arcs forward.
With draw, the cue ball starts down the tangent line and curves backward, away from the object ball’s path. Heavy draw on a thin cut produces that distinctive hook back toward the shooter.
The key insight is that the cue ball always begins on the tangent line regardless of spin. Spin only decides how it departs from that line, and how quickly. If you are trying to pass the cue ball through a tight gap between two balls, you aim the tangent line through the gap first and then decide how much follow or draw you can afford before the arc puts you into trouble.
The 30-Degree Rule: Where a Rolling Cue Ball Goes
Most shots in a real game are not stun shots. They are rolling shots, because the cue ball has traveled far enough to pick up natural roll before contact. For those, the useful shortcut is the 30-degree rule.
On a half-ball hit, a naturally rolling cue ball deflects roughly 30 degrees from its original direction. A half-ball hit means the cue ball’s edge lines up with the object ball’s center, which produces a cut angle of about 30 degrees on the object ball as well.
What makes the rule so usable is how forgiving it is. The cue ball’s deflection stays near 30 degrees across a fairly wide band of cut angles, roughly from a quarter-ball hit to a three-quarter-ball hit. So for a big chunk of the shots you actually face, you can assume 30 degrees and be close enough to plan two balls ahead.
Outside that band the rule breaks down. Nearly straight shots send a rolling cue ball almost straight through, and very thin cuts barely move it off line at all.
Three Drills That Make This Automatic
Drill One: The Tangent Fence
Set an object ball a diamond off the side rail with a cut angle of about 30 degrees. Place two balls on the cloth as goalposts, sitting on where you believe the tangent line runs. Shoot the object ball with a firm stun stroke and watch whether the cue ball splits your goalposts. Move the goalposts until you are right three times running, then change the cut angle and do it again.
Drill Two: Same Shot, Three Spins
Take one shot and shoot it ten times: stun, then follow, then draw, and note where the cue ball finishes each time. You are building a mental picture of the fan of possible paths from a single contact point. That fan is your position play menu.
Drill Three: Call the Landing Zone
Before every shot in a practice rack, place a piece of chalk on the cloth where you expect the cue ball to stop. Shoot. Measure the miss. Most players discover they are consistently long, which usually means they are underestimating how much a rolling cue ball keeps traveling after it comes off the tangent line.

Where Players Get the Tangent Line Wrong
Three mistakes account for most of the misreads. The first is forgetting that the tangent line pivots as the cut angle changes. Players memorize the line on one shot and then apply the same picture to a thinner cut, where the line has swung well off where they expect it.
The second is assuming a stun stroke produced stun. Hitting the cue ball at center does not guarantee it arrives sliding. Over any real distance, friction with the cloth turns a center hit into a rolling ball, which is why a shot that stunned perfectly from two feet follows forward from eight feet. To stun at distance you need a touch of draw at the tip so the ball is still sliding when it gets there.
The third is ignoring the rails. The tangent line tells you the cue ball’s first direction, not where it stops. On a table with fresh cloth and lively cushions, a cue ball that leaves on a good line can still travel three rails into trouble. Speed control is the other half of the equation, and no amount of geometry substitutes for it.
Putting It Together at the Table
The practical sequence on any shot is short. First, find the tangent line, because that is where the cue ball starts no matter what. Second, decide whether the cue ball will be sliding or rolling when it arrives, since that decides whether you are working from the 90-degree rule or the 30-degree rule. Third, choose your spin to bend the path toward the zone you want.
Do that for a few sessions and something changes in how the table looks. You stop seeing a scatter of balls and start seeing lines. The shot you are on tells you where the cue ball can go, which tells you which ball is next, which tells you whether the rack is runnable at all.
That is the whole game, and it starts with a right angle.
