Joint Protectors Explained: Why a $15 Accessory Guards the Most Expensive Part of Your Cue

The joint is the most precisely machined part of a two-piece cue, and it spends most of its life exposed. Every time you unscrew the shaft and slide the halves into a case, the pin on the butt and the threaded insert in the shaft are sitting open, ready to collect chalk dust, pick up a ding from a jump cue rattling beside them, or take on moisture from a humid car trunk. A joint protector is a cap that screws onto each half and closes that opening. The good ones cost about what a couple of cubes of premium chalk cost, and they guard a part of the cue that can run into the hundreds of dollars to repair.

This guide explains what joint protectors actually do, how to match them to the pin on your cue, the difference between plastic, metal, and wood versions, and which sets we recommend for the brands we sell.

What a joint protector protects

On the butt half, the threat is the pin. It sticks out an inch or so and has fine threads, and even a small burr on those threads will make the shaft screw on rough and eventually chew up the insert. Pins also collect grime in the thread valleys, which works its way into the shaft insert and changes how the two halves seat against each other. The joint collar face, the flat ring the shaft presses against, can pick up nicks that create a tiny gap and a change in the way the cue hits.

On the shaft half, the threat is the insert and the joint face. A shaft insert is a small brass or stainless or phenolic sleeve set into the wood. If dust packs into it, the shaft will not seat all the way down. If the face of the shaft collar gets dented, the same thing happens. Moisture is the quiet enemy here, because the end grain of the maple is exposed at the joint and it will absorb humidity faster than any other part of the shaft.

A matched pair of protectors caps both halves. The butt protector is a female cap that threads onto the pin. The shaft protector is a short male plug with a matching pin that threads into the insert. Together they seal the threads, cover both faces, and turn each half of the cue into a smooth, closed cylinder that can slide in and out of a case without catching on anything.

When they matter most

If your cue lives at home in a wall rack and only comes apart for cleaning, you can get by without protectors. Everyone else should have them. The three situations where a joint takes damage are travel, storage next to other cues, and humidity changes, and league players hit all three every week. The shaft and butt bounce against each other in a soft case, a jump cue or extension shares the tube, and the case rides in a car through the North Carolina summer.

Protectors also help when you own more than one shaft. Spare shafts tend to be stored loose, and the insert on a spare shaft is exactly the sort of thing that gets packed with chalk dust and forgotten. Matching protectors to your pin

This is the part that trips people up, because a joint protector is pin-specific. There is no universal set. The protector has to thread onto your particular pin, so before you buy, you need to know what joint your cue uses. Uni-Loc

Uni-Loc is a quick-release joint used by Predator, Lucasi, Poison, and many others. It threads on in a few turns and has a distinctive pin with a wide, coarse thread and a smooth pilot at the tip. The Predator Uni-Loc Joint Protectors JPPREU are the standard plastic set for this joint at $15, and they fit any Uni-Loc cue, not only Predator. If you want a metal version, the Lucasi Hybrid JPLH Joint Protector Set at $20.70 is stainless steel with a black finish and is made for Uni-Loc joints as well.

Radial

Radial pins are thicker, with a rounded thread profile that gives a very solid feel at the joint. Predator’s higher-end cues use Radial, and so do a number of custom makers. The Predator JPPRER Radial Joint Protector Set at $15 is the match. A Uni-Loc protector will not thread onto a Radial pin, so double-check which one you have.

3/8×10 and 5/16×14 and 5/16×18

Traditional threaded pins come in three common sizes. The 3/8×10 is the big wood-to-wood pin used by McDermott, Schon, Joss, and most custom cues. The 5/16×14 is the pin on Pechauer cues and a number of older production cues. The 5/16×18 is the finer thread on Players, Meucci, Action, and many other entry-level and mid-range cues. Plastic, metal, or wood

Plastic protectors are light, cheap, and do the job. They will not dent your case, they weigh nothing in the bag, and if you lose one you are out fifteen dollars. The only real downside is that they can crack if the case takes a serious drop, and a cracked protector can leave a sharp edge near the pin.

Metal protectors, usually aluminum or stainless steel, are the durable choice. They cannot crack, they seal a little more firmly, and they look sharp. The trade-off is a small amount of extra weight in the case and a slightly higher price. For a cue that travels every week, metal is worth it.

Wood protectors, often turned from the same exotic species as the cue’s butt, are the cosmetic upgrade. They are made to match, and on a high-end cue they finish the look. They protect just as well as plastic and should be treated with the same care you give the cue itself, since they can be dented.

Using them the right way

Thread the protectors on finger-tight and stop. Cranking them down does nothing for protection and can stress the insert over time. Take them off before you play, obviously, and keep them in the same pocket of your case every time so you never leave them on the table at the end of the night. Once a month, pull them off and wipe the pin and the insert with a dry cloth. If you see chalk packed into the threads, a soft toothbrush clears it. Never use oil or lubricant on a cue joint; it attracts dust and will make the shaft seat inconsistently.

If a protector ever gets hard to thread on, stop and look at the pin. A protector that suddenly binds is often the first sign of a burr or a bent pin, and catching that early is the whole point of owning them.

Do they change the hit?

No, because they are not on the cue when you play. What they do is keep the hit from changing. A joint that seats fully and cleanly every time delivers the same feel and the same feedback every time. A joint with grit in the threads or a nicked face will seat a little differently from session to session, and players who feel their cue “playing different tonight” are sometimes feeling exactly that.
