Kielwood

Kielwood is maple that has been torrefied, meaning it is heat treated in a low-oxygen environment to drive out moisture and sugar before it is turned into a shaft. Quarter King carries 32 cues and shafts built from kielwood, priced from about $420 to about $1,600. The process leaves the wood a darker caramel to chocolate color and makes it far less reactive to humidity than untreated maple, while keeping the feel and sound players expect from a real wood shaft.

Every item is brand new and 100% genuine, backed by its full manufacturer warranty. Free shipping on orders over $98 (contiguous US) and 30-day returns. Every spec on this page is checked against the manufacturer's published data by our Wilmington, NC store team.

About Kielwood

What a kielwood shaft is

Kielwood is premium maple put through torrefaction, a controlled heat treatment carried
out in a low-oxygen environment. Posters on the AZBilliards forums who have looked into the
process point out it is the same basic technique long used on wood for boat keels and
musical instruments: cooking out natural sugars and internal moisture permanently changes
the wood's cell structure so it can no longer take on humidity the way an untreated maple
shaft can.

The visible result is color. Torrefied maple darkens to a caramel or chocolate hue
during the process, which is why a kielwood shaft looks noticeably different from a pale,
natural maple shaft even before you pick it up. The wood also comes out lighter than
before treatment, since the sugars and moisture driven out add up to real weight.

How it plays and who it suits

Forum opinion on the AZBilliards boards is that torrefaction mostly buys stability, not
a guaranteed leap in deflection. One longtime poster who switched from a carbon fiber
shaft to a maple kielwood shaft said the carbon still tested a little lower on deflection,
but not by much, and that the wood's appearance and resistance to dings made the switch
worthwhile anyway. Other posters in the same discussion note that how low a kielwood shaft
actually plays depends more on how the tip end is built and cored than on the torrefaction
itself, since the heat treatment mainly affects weight and moisture resistance rather than
the shaft's internal geometry.

Kielwood suits players who want the resistance to warping that draws people to carbon
fiber without giving up a wood shaft's traditional feel and sound, along with anyone who
simply prefers the darker, figured look torrefied maple takes on.

Kielwood cues and shafts at Quarter King

Our 32 kielwood listings are not yet tagged to a specific brand attribute in our system,
but the lineup is built around two products: the
Brunswick x Lucasi Ebony
180th Anniversary Cue
, a complete playing cue, and the Lucasi Pro Kielwood 10-Splice CF
InFUZED Shaft, a standalone replacement offered across a range of tip diameters from 12mm
to 12.9mm. Several tip sizes, including the
12mm version and
the 12.9mm version,
are currently in stock, while a few others are out of stock at the moment. Browse our
shafts category for the full spread of tip sizes,
and the Lucasi brand page for the rest of what the maker
offers.

How to choose and compatibility

Since most of what we carry in kielwood is a standalone replacement shaft rather than a
complete cue, fit is the first thing to check. Joint pin, thread pitch, and shaft diameter
all need to match your cue's butt for a kielwood shaft to work as a swap; our
joint type and shaft size pages cover
what to look for.

If you want a wood shaft without the torrefaction treatment, compare our
classic wood shafts. If deflection reduction
matters more than wood feel, our carbon fiber
shafts are engineered specifically for that.

Frequently asked questions about Kielwood

What does torrefaction do to a maple shaft?

It heat-treats the wood in a low-oxygen setting to remove moisture and sugars, closing the wood's cells so it stops absorbing humidity. That is what makes kielwood shafts resist warping.

Is kielwood lower deflection than regular maple?

It can be, since torrefied wood is lighter, but forum players note the tip-end construction of the shaft affects deflection more than the heat treatment itself.

Why is kielwood a different color than a regular maple shaft?

The heat treatment darkens the wood to a caramel or chocolate hue as a visible side effect of driving out its natural sugars and moisture, not a stain or finish.

Will a kielwood shaft fit any cue?

Only if the joint pin, thread, and shaft diameter match your cue's butt. Check our joint type and shaft size pages before buying one of our standalone replacement shafts.
