Two cues can share a shaft diameter, a tip, a taper and a weight, and still feel like different instruments. A large part of that difference lives in a half inch of hardware most players never think about until the day they try to put a new shaft on an old butt and discover the threads do not match.
The joint is where a two piece cue becomes one piece again, and it does three jobs at once. It aligns the shaft to the butt, it transmits vibration between them, and it determines what aftermarket parts you can ever bolt on. Getting fluent in joint types is the difference between shopping confidently for an upgrade and buying a $400 shaft that does not fit anything you own.
The Pin Standards You Will Actually Meet
5/16 x 18
Eighteen threads per inch on a 5/16 inch pin. This is the workhorse of American production cues and one of the most common joints in the sport. It is a fast joint, meaning it seats in relatively few turns, and it is usually paired with a steel or phenolic collar. Because the thread count is coarse, it tolerates a bit of grit and abuse better than a fine pitch pin. If you own a mid-range production cue from a major American maker, there is a good chance this is what is under the collar.
5/16 x 14
Same pin diameter, coarser thread. Fourteen threads per inch means fewer turns to seat and a slightly different feel through the joint. It shows up on a range of production and custom cues and is functionally similar to the 18 pitch version, but the two are not interchangeable. This is the trap that catches people. The pin looks identical to the eye and will not thread in.
3/8 x 10 and 3/8 x 11
A larger pin with very coarse threads, common on custom and higher end cues. Bigger pin, more mass at the joint, and a feel most players describe as solid or firm. Ten and eleven thread counts are different standards, so again, count before you buy. The 3/8 family is often paired with wood-to-wood construction where the shaft threads directly into the butt without a metal collar, which is what a lot of players mean when they say a cue has a soft or feedback-rich hit.
Radial
The radial pin uses a rounded thread profile rather than a sharp V, which spreads contact over a larger surface and resists the thread damage that a dropped shaft causes. It has become close to an industry standard for aftermarket carbon shafts because it seats consistently and it survives being taken apart several times a week for years. If you are planning a shaft upgrade at some point, a radial joint gives you the widest menu of options.
Uni-Loc and Quick Release
Quick release joints seat in roughly a third of a turn instead of five or six. For a player assembling and breaking down a cue several times a night, that convenience is real. The engineering tradeoff is that a quick release has less thread engagement, so the fit tolerance has to be tighter to feel as solid as a fully threaded pin. Modern versions manage this well. Why Joint Protectors Are Not Optional
Threads are precision surfaces. A pin that has been nicked by a case zipper or packed with chalk dust and pocket lint will not seat square, and a shaft that does not seat square introduces a tiny misalignment between shaft and butt. That misalignment is exactly the kind of thing a player blames on their stroke for six months.

Break Cues, Jump Cues and the Joint Question
Break cues put more stress through the joint than anything else you own. A full power break sends a shock wave back down the cue, and every one of those hits works on the threads. This is why break and jump cues so often use a quick release or a phenolic joint, and why the joint on a break cue tends to loosen faster than the one on a playing cue.
Two habits protect it. Snug the joint by hand before every session, because a joint that works loose during play will feel dead and rob power without ever announcing itself. And never overtighten. A joint pulled down hard with a twist of the wrist stretches the threads over time, and a stretched thread never seats the same way again. Firm finger pressure is the whole specification.
Jump cues that break down into three pieces add a second joint at the handle, which is another set of threads to keep clean. If your jump cue has started to feel inconsistent, pull it apart and look at both joints before you blame the tip.
Keeping the Threads Clean
Chalk dust is the enemy. It is abrasive, it is everywhere, and it finds threads. Every few weeks, wipe the pin and the shaft insert with a dry cloth or a soft toothbrush. Do not use oil or grease on the threads, because oil holds dust and turns a clean joint into a grinding paste. Dry and clean is the goal.
How to Identify Your Pin Without Guessing
Start with the maker. If you know the brand and model, the joint specification is usually published and a single search settles it. That is the fastest route and the one to try first.
If the cue is unbranded or old, look at the pin itself. A radial pin has visibly rounded thread crests rather than sharp peaks. A quick release pin is short with a wide, steep thread and seats in well under one full turn. Measure the pin diameter with calipers if you have them, then count threads across a half inch and double it to get threads per inch.
When in doubt, take the cue to a shop rather than trying to force a fit. A cross threaded pin is a repair job, and it is a repair job that costs more than the joint protector that would have prevented the problem in the first place.
Does Joint Type Change How a Cue Plays
It changes feel more than it changes performance. A steel jointed cue with a big pin transmits a sharper, brighter feedback into the hands. A wood-to-wood joint feels softer and duller. Neither pockets more balls. What they do is give you different information about what just happened at the tip, and players develop strong preferences about which kind of information they want.
The measurable differences that matter, deflection and end mass, live in the front six inches of the shaft, not the joint. So if you are chasing performance, spend on the shaft. If you are chasing a feel you liked in someone else’s cue, ask what the joint was, because that is often the variable you actually noticed. Either way, put protectors on the threads and keep the option open.
