Stun Shots and the Tangent Line: The Cue Ball Path That Decides Position

Ask an intermediate player why they lost position and the answer is almost always about spin. Not enough draw, too much follow, forgot the inside english. The honest answer is usually simpler and less flattering. They did not know where the cue ball was going to go before they hit it, because they never learned the one line that governs every shot on the table.

That line is the tangent line, and the shot that puts the cue ball on it is the stun shot. Learn those two things properly and a large part of position play stops being guesswork. You will not need to memorize a hundred patterns, because you will be able to predict the cue ball’s first direction on any cut angle in about half a second.

What the Tangent Line Actually Is

When the cue ball strikes an object ball, the object ball leaves along the line joining the two ball centers at the moment of contact. That is the line of centers, and it is why aiming systems work at all. The tangent line is the line perpendicular to that, running through the contact point at a right angle to the object ball’s path.

Here is the part that matters. If the cue ball is sliding with no forward roll and no backspin at the instant of contact, it departs along the tangent line. Exactly along it. Not approximately. This is not a rule of thumb, it is a consequence of how momentum transfers between two spheres of equal mass, and it holds on every cut angle except a dead straight shot.

So the tangent line is your baseline. Follow lifts the cue ball path forward off that line. Draw pulls it back behind that line. Stun keeps it on the line. Once you can find the tangent line by eye, every position decision becomes a question of how far above or below it you want to end up, rather than a blind shove and hope.

Stun Is About Timing, Not About Hitting Low

The most common misunderstanding is that stun means hitting the cue ball in the center. It does not. Stun means the cue ball arrives at the object ball with zero net spin, and where you have to strike it to achieve that depends entirely on distance.

Cloth friction converts backspin into forward roll as the ball travels. Over a short distance a center ball hit still has some slide left, so it stuns naturally. Over eight feet, that same center ball hit has picked up full natural roll long before it gets there, and it will follow through the tangent line instead of stopping on it. To stun a long shot you have to strike below center and let the friction burn the backspin off at exactly the right moment.

This is why the stop shot drill is the single best diagnostic in pool. Set the cue ball and an object ball in a straight line to a pocket, one diamond apart, and stop the cue ball dead. Then move to two diamonds. Then three, four, five. Each new distance requires a slightly lower tip position or a slightly firmer stroke to hold the same result. Working through that ladder teaches your hands the friction curve of your own table, and no amount of reading substitutes for it.

Equipment does not create a stun shot, but bad equipment will hide one. A tip that has gone hard and glassy will not hold chalk on a below-center hit, and the miscue you get instead teaches you nothing. Finding the Line at the Table

There is a physical trick that works better than visualizing. Stand behind the shot and hold your hand flat, fingers together, pointing along the direction the object ball will travel. Now rotate your hand ninety degrees at the wrist. Your fingers are now pointing down the tangent line. Look at where they point. That is where a stunned cue ball ends up going, and it is usually somewhere the player did not expect.

The second trick is the ninety degree check on thin cuts. On a very thin cut the tangent line runs almost parallel to your aim line, which means a stunned cue ball barely changes direction and keeps traveling forward. On a thick cut, close to straight, the tangent line runs nearly perpendicular, so a stunned cue ball squirts sideways across the table. Thin cuts send the cue ball forward, thick cuts send it sideways. Players who scratch constantly on thick cuts are usually stunning without realizing it.

Three Drills That Build the Skill

The Stop Shot Ladder

Straight in, cue ball one diamond from the object ball. Stop it dead. Move back one diamond and repeat. Continue to the full length of the table. Do not move to the next distance until you have three consecutive dead stops. Most players discover their limit is around four diamonds, and that limit is a stroke problem, not a talent problem.

The Half Ball Stun

Set a thirty degree cut. Place a coin or a piece of chalk on the tangent line about two feet from the contact point. Stun the shot and try to run the cue ball over the marker. This drill is unforgiving in a useful way, because the marker either gets hit or it does not. There is no partial credit and no self-deception.

Stun Across the Table

Cut a ball into a corner pocket from near the side rail, and stun the cue ball so it travels across the table and stops before it reaches the far rail. This teaches you to control tangent line distance, not just direction. Direction gets you to the right side of the table. Distance gets you the shot.

The Mistake That Ruins Stun Shots

Almost every failed stun shot comes from one of two errors, and neither is about aim. The first is decelerating into the cue ball. A stroke that slows at contact lets the cue ball pick up roll it should not have, and the ball follows forward off the tangent line. Accelerate through, even on a soft shot.

The second is elevating the butt of the cue. Any elevation puts a downward component on the cue ball that turns into forward roll the moment the ball lands. On a shot over a blocker you have no choice, and you should expect the cue ball to run forward more than the tangent line predicts. On an open table, get the cue as level as the rail allows.

Where Stun Wins Games

The obvious application is short position on the same rail. But the underrated one is safety play. A stunned cue ball is a predictable cue ball, and predictability is what a safety needs. When you are trying to leave your opponent frozen behind a blocker, you cannot afford the extra eighteen inches that follow adds. Stun the cue ball onto the tangent line, and it goes where you sent it and dies there.

Stun also cleans up break-and-run pattern play. Running out is mostly a sequence of small movements, and small movements are exactly what a stunned cue ball produces. Big draws and long follows look impressive and introduce error. A run out built on short stuns and half ball stuns keeps the cue ball inside a small zone where nothing surprising can happen.

One equipment note worth making. A stun shot demands a straight delivery more than any other shot, because a stunned cue ball has no spin to mask a crooked stroke. If your cue does not feel like an extension of your arm, that flaw shows up here first. A shaft with predictable deflection helps, and the shaft category and the full cue range are worth a look if you are fighting your equipment rather than the table. Fresh chalk matters too, since every below-center hit is a chance to miscue.

Spend a week on nothing but stop shots and half ball stuns. You will not add a single flashy shot to your game. You will simply stop being surprised by where the cue ball ends up, and that alone is worth more racks than any new stroke you could learn.
