About Lucasi Break & Jump Cues

About Lucasi's Break & Jump Cues

Lucasi, the production cue line Cue & Case has built since Jim Lucas founded the company in 1991, makes a small, dedicated Break & Jump series alongside its playing cues. We carry 4 current models, including the L2000JB, which Lucasi builds to cover both the break and jump role in a single cue. Every model in this series runs Lucasi's own Air Hog engineering rather than the standard Zero Flexpoint spec used on the brand's Custom and Hybrid playing cues. At about $170 to $500, this is Lucasi's most affordable series, well under the Custom line's roughly $470-to-$1,100 range and below the $620-to-$1,000 Hybrid Cues series.

Technology, in plain English

Air Hog build

Lucasi calls its jump and break cue engineering "Air Hog." The core of it is an extra-lightweight butt with an ergonomic flare, paired with a 13.75mm or 14mm Bakelite tip that Lucasi builds with what it calls an S4 Super Sized Sweet Spot, an enlarged contact area Cue & Case markets for more forgiving, effortless jump shots and greater ball control.

Carbon fiber ferrule and joint collar

Where a standard Lucasi playing cue uses a Zero Flexpoint or fiber ferrule, the Air Hog cues use what Cue & Case calls a virtually indestructible carbon fiber ferrule and joint collar, built to handle the harder, more direct impact a jump or break shot puts through the front of the cue. It's a durability choice specific to this series rather than something carried over from the playing-cue lineup.

Fusion G5 grip with X-dampening

The Hybrid Air Hog models, the LHAH2 and LHAH5W, carry the same category of Fusion G5 grip and X-dampening technology Lucasi uses on its standard Hybrid playing cues under the X-Shox name, in place of a traditional wrap, aimed at reducing the vibration felt at the hit even on a cue built for a harder strike.

The four models

The L2000JB Jump Break Cue is Lucasi's two-in-one option, built to both break and jump with the Air Hog tip and ferrule setup, priced at about $500, the most expensive of the four. The L2000JC Jump Cue is the dedicated, lower-cost jump option at about $170. The LHAH2 and LHAH5W Hybrid Air Hog Jump Cues sit in between, at about $400 and about $270, and add the Fusion G5 Hybrid-style grip to the same Air Hog tip and ferrule build. All 4 are currently in stock, and all 4 use the same Uni-Loc joint as most of the rest of the Lucasi catalog.

The models we carry

Here is the build spec behind each of the four models, model by model.

Lucasi L2000JB Jump Break Cue (L2000JB)

The L2000JB is built as a two-in-one break and jump cue. Cue & Case's own spec lists two quick-release Uni-Loc joints, a high-impact ferrule, and a super-hard Bakelite tip on a 29-inch solid maple shaft, with a natural stained Birdseye maple forearm and butt wrapped in two black-and-white double-pressed Irish linen wraps. Our listing offers 4 color and finish variants at one price, about $500, and shows in stock. See the Lucasi L2000JB Jump Break Cue for the full spec and photos.

Lucasi L2000JC Jump Cue (L2000JC)

The L2000JC is Lucasi's dedicated jump-only cue: an extra-light, roughly 7.6-ounce body on a 29-inch solid maple shaft, wrapless for the lightest possible feel, with the same Uni-Loc joint and Bakelite tip as the rest of the lineup and an ergonomically flared handle cut to a full 15-inch professional taper. It is the least expensive model in the series, about $170, with 7 in stock. See the Lucasi L2000JC Jump Cue for details.

Lucasi LHAH2 Hybrid Air Hog Jump Cue (LHAH2)

The LHAH2 breaks down into three fully interchangeable pieces connected by Uni-Loc joints, rather than the two-piece build of the L2000 cues, and ships with an 11-inch jump extension. It carries a 13.75mm Bakelite tip with an enlarged sweet spot, a carbon fiber ferrule and joint collar, a wrapless Fusion G5 grip, and a 29-inch Hybrid Laminated shaft. It is about $400 and shows 5 in stock. See the Lucasi LHAH2 Hybrid Air Hog Jump Cue for full photos.

Lucasi LHAH5W Hybrid Air Hog Jump Cue (LHAH5W)

The LHAH5W is Lucasi's other Uni-Loc-joint Air Hog jump cue, built on a 29-inch Hybrid Laminated shaft with a 14mm Bakelite tip, a 1-inch XTC high-impact fiber ferrule, and a Sport Wrap grip rather than the LHAH2's wrapless Fusion G5 grip. It is the less expensive of the two Hybrid Air Hog models, about $270, with 1 in stock. See the Lucasi LHAH5W Hybrid Air Hog Jump Cue for full photos.

How to choose within the Break & Jump lineup

The four models split along two real decisions rather than one obvious upgrade path. The first is whether you want a dedicated jump cue or a combination cue. Lucasi builds the L2000JC purely for jumping, at the lightest weight and lowest price in the lineup, while the L2000JB adds the extra joint and ferrule hardware needed to also serve as a break cue, at roughly triple the L2000JC's price. Forum members on AZBilliards generally treat jump/break combination cues as a compromise, solid for breaking but only middling for jumping next to a cue built for jumping alone, so the choice comes down to whether one cue doing both jobs adequately beats two cues that each do one job well.

The second decision is between the L2000 cues' fixed two-piece build and the Hybrid Air Hog models' interchangeable-piece design. The LHAH2 breaks down into three fully interchangeable pieces and ships with a jump extension, while both L2000 cues are simple two-piece cues with no extension to add or remove. A player who wants to adjust the cue's length and balance for different jump angles has more to work with in the Air Hog design; a player who wants the simplest possible jump cue is better served by the L2000JC.

Joint, shaft and compatibility

All 4 Break & Jump cues use Lucasi's Uni-Loc joint, the same quick-release connection used across most of the rest of the Lucasi catalog, so a Break & Jump cue's shaft is not interchangeable with a Radial or Turbo-Lock cue elsewhere in the line. Shaft size runs larger than a typical playing cue here, 2 cues at 13.00mm and one apiece at 13.75mm and 14.00mm, sizes chosen for the Bakelite jump and break tip rather than the 12.75mm or 11.75mm sizes common on Lucasi's playing cues. Our full shafts category carries Uni-Loc-compatible options if you need a spare.

Materials and construction, explained

All 4 models in this series use a Bakelite tip rather than the layered leather tip found on most playing cues. Bakelite is a hard synthetic resin that does not compress the way leather does, so it pops off the cue ball faster on a jump attempt and survives the repeated hard impact of a break shot without mushrooming the way a soft leather tip would. See our glossary for tip, ferrule, and other cue terms.

The LHAH2 uses a carbon fiber ferrule and joint collar, while the L2000JB, L2000JC, and LHAH5W use a 1-inch XTC high-impact fiber ferrule instead of the standard Zero Flexpoint ferrule found on Lucasi's playing cues. Both are synthetic composites chosen over a traditional ferrule material because they resist cracking under the sharper, harder impact a jump or break shot sends through the front of the cue.

The L2000JB's forearm and butt are cut from Birdseye maple, a maple grain pattern with small circular figuring caused by the way the tree's grain grows, then wrapped in black-and-white double-pressed Irish linen, a tightly woven fabric wrap that gives a textured, non-slip surface and absorbs hand moisture better than a bare wood handle during a long session.

The LHAH2's Fusion G5 grip is a molded rubber-compound material used in place of a wrap, giving the butt a tacky, textured surface a player can grip firmly on the harder, faster stroke a jump shot needs, without the upkeep a fabric wrap requires over time.

Who it suits

A Break & Jump cue is a second cue, not a replacement for your primary playing cue. The L2000JC or one of the Hybrid Air Hog models suits a player who wants a dedicated jump cue to keep their main cue's tip and shaft out of hard, glancing jump contact, and the L2000JB suits a player who wants one cue that covers both the break and the jump shot rather than carrying two specialty cues.

Warranty and what to know before you buy

Break & Jump cues carry the same lifetime guarantee as the rest of the Lucasi range, covering material and manufacturing defects, including warpage, in effect since July 2007. It does not cover normal wear on the tip or grip, and a claim requires the original sales receipt from an authorized Lucasi retailer; the guarantee is non-transferable to a later owner. Given how hard these cues get hit by design, the wear exclusion on the tip is worth keeping in mind more than it would be on a playing cue.

What players say

General AZBilliards sentiment on Lucasi points to a durable, good-value cue overall, with wraps on some older models needing replacement after heavy use and mixed opinions on ferrule durability on the Hybrid-grip playing cues specifically. The carbon fiber ferrule on the Break & Jump line is a different part than the ferrule those complaints were about, built for this series' harder-impact use case, and no independent forum feedback specific to the Air Hog ferrule's long-term durability was found.

Where to go from here

For a primary playing cue to pair with one of these, see the Lucasi Hybrid Cues or Lucasi Custom Cues series, or browse the full Lucasi Pool Cues category. For jump and break cues from other brands, see our full pool cues category.
