What is a classic wood shaft made of?

Hard rock maple (Acer saccharum), turned from aged, straight-grained blanks and finished with a conical pro taper. It is the shaft material cue makers have used for most of the sport's history.

Do wood shafts deflect more than carbon fiber?

Generally yes. A solid maple shaft carries more mass near the tip than a hollowed carbon design, so it pushes the cue ball off-line a bit more on hits away from center.

Can I replace a classic wood shaft with a carbon fiber one?

Only if the joint pin, thread, and shaft diameter match. Check our joint type and shaft size pages, or compare options on our carbon fiber shaft page before buying separately.

Why do some players still prefer wood over low-deflection shafts?

Feel and sound. Players on the AZBilliards forums note maple delivers louder, more resonant feedback than carbon, and many compensate for the extra squirt as part of their normal stroke.

Classic Wood

Classic wood is the traditional hard rock maple shaft that most pool cues have shipped with for generations. Quarter King carries 1,173 cues built with a classic wood shaft, spanning entry-level break cues to high-end presentation pieces, priced from about $20 to about $2,900. A well-turned maple shaft is prized for its crisp, resonant hit and the tactile feedback it sends back through the cue on every stroke. It is also the material every carbon fiber and torrefied wood shaft gets measured against, since maple set the baseline for how a cue is supposed to feel long before either alternative existed.
