About Cuetec AVID Opt-X Cues

About the AVID Opt-X series

AVID Opt-X takes the AVID platform in a different direction than Chroma or Era: instead of a solid color or a traditional stain, Opt-X's forearm carries an original, intricate graphic designed to create an optical illusion of depth, finished with a moisture-shedding Leather-Tec wrap on every cue. We stock all 6 Opt-X colorways, Gold, Red, Mint, Teal, Lavender and Blue, all currently in stock, from about $390 up to about $430.

AVID's shaft construction traces back to 1989, when Cuetec's founding engineer, Jones Chang, adapted a fiberglass and graphite cladding process from the tennis racket industry into the company's first cues. Opt-X's shaft uses a more refined version of that idea: multiple thin glass-composite plies bonded to maple rather than the single fiberglass shell Cuetec used on its first eight cues, four fiberglass and four graphite.

Quarter King Billiards is an authorized Cuetec dealer, so every Opt-X cue we sell qualifies for Cuetec's manufacturer warranty once registered. Cuetec's exclusive U.S. partner, Imperial International, has run that warranty program and Cuetec's dealer network since taking over the business in 2006. Cuetec lists its U.S. showroom at Carlstadt, New Jersey.

The technology inside every Opt-X cue

Player's choice of AVID shaft diameter

Opt-X ships with the same player's choice of an 11.75mm, 12.25mm or 12.75mm AVID glass-bonded low-deflection shaft as the rest of the AVID line, built from thin plies of glass composite bonded to A-grade, kiln-dried hard maple. Every Opt-X cue we carry is tagged at 12.75mm, in Cuetec's Fiberglass shaft-type category, on the 21.3mm variant of the 3/8x14 joint pin.

Air Light front-end construction

That shaft also uses Cuetec's Air Light front-end, bored out more than 10 inches from the tip to remove mass from the section that drives squirt, the sideways deflection you get off an off-center hit, so the cue ball tracks closer to where you aimed.

Original depth-illusion forearm graphics

What sets Opt-X apart is the forearm itself: an original, intricate design engineered to create the illusion of depth on what is still a flat cylindrical surface, a different approach than Chroma's solid colors or Era's traditional stain.

Moisture-shedding Leather-Tec wrap

Every Opt-X cue carries a Leather-Tec wrap that Cuetec designs to shed moisture, which matters if your hands run warm or sweat during a long session, since a wrap that holds moisture can start to slip in your grip hand over a match.

Acueweight Generation II balance system

Opt-X also carries the second-generation Acueweight system, Cuetec's fused butt cap design with cavity space for weighted spacers, letting you shift the balance point without a proprietary tool. Most current Cuetec cues, AVID and Cynergy models alike, use a spacer system like this one to support weight changes, based on the specs we've checked, with only a small number of legacy models built without one.

AVID Level-Line butt taper and tip

Opt-X's butt is cut to Cuetec's AVID Level-Line taper, a profile the company engineered specifically for the AVID platform rather than adapting a taper from Cynergy. Per our own catalog specs for 12.75mm AVID cues, Opt-X pairs its shaft with a 12.75mm Tiger Everest tip, a thin white sighting ferrule and a stainless steel collar, the same combination found across most of Cuetec's 12.75mm AVID shafts. Cuetec's engineers describe the philosophy behind the AVID platform bluntly: every component, from the shaft's laminated tip to its patent-pending low-deflection construction to the Level-Line taper, was built to exceed player expectations rather than hit a price target.

The six Opt-X colorways

All 6 colorways share identical specs, the shaft, taper, wrap and Acueweight system are the same across every one, the only difference is the forearm graphic: Gold (CT380), Red (CT381), Mint (CT382), Teal (CT383), Lavender (CT384) and Blue (CT385). Our own color-attribute tagging on the 6 cues we stock groups them as Black (6) with secondary tags in Blue (2), Green (2) and Red (1), since several of the graphic finishes carry more than one dominant color.

Every one of those 6 Opt-X cues we carry uses the Leather-Tec wrap; based on our own catalog specs, that finish matches the pebbled full-grain leather wrap Cuetec lists across its Opt-X and comparable AVID and Cynergy models.

Opt-X vs. the rest of the AVID line

Opt-X's depth-illusion graphic is the most visually distinct treatment in the AVID family. The AVID Chroma series takes the simpler route with eight solid forearm colors on the same shaft platform, while the AVID Era series goes traditional with stained sneaky-pete maple. The AVID Proof series, developed with pro player Skyler Woodward, is themed around Kentucky bluegrass instruments and bourbon-cask oak. All four share the same player's-choice AVID shaft and Acueweight system, so if Opt-X's graphic isn't your style, the shaft performance carries over to any of the others. Cuetec also builds a break and jump cue on that same AVID engineering, sold separately as the AVID Surge series.

How AVID compares to Cynergy

Opt-X's roughly $390-to-$430 price sits toward the upper half of Cuetec's AVID band, which spans about $260 up to about $450 across the AVID cues we carry, still well under the Cynergy platform's roughly $500-to-$1,440 range. That price gap reflects a construction gap: Cynergy replaces the glass-bonded maple shaft with an all carbon fiber composite build, made inside Cuetec's own Advanced Composites Division and developed with the direction of Shane Van Boening, whose input also shaped the Cynergy shaft Cuetec markets as the first carbon fiber playing shaft to capture a Men's WPA world title. That price gap lines up with Cuetec's own marketing language for AVID, which promises performance that "exceeds those of cues costing hundreds, if not thousands of dollars more," a claim the company makes about its own product, not the result of an independent test. Among the four AVID sub-series we carry in this batch, Proof sits at the top of the price band, Chroma at the bottom, with Era and Opt-X in between.

Per Cuetec's own spec sheets, Opt-X and the rest of the AVID line are manufactured in China, with warranty coverage following the cue rather than the factory of origin.

Joint, shaft and compatibility

Every Opt-X cue we carry uses the 21.3mm variant of the 3/8x14 joint pin, matched to a 12.75mm shaft in Cuetec's fiberglass construction, and all 6 carry the leather wrap Leather-Tec finish. Like the rest of the AVID line, Opt-X's shaft-to-butt joint runs through a stainless steel collar. If you need a spare AVID shaft to match, check our shafts category.

Who the Opt-X series suits

Opt-X suits a player who wants a visually distinctive cue and prefers a leather wrap's grip to a bare maple handle, particularly if your hands tend to sweat during play, since Cuetec designed the Leather-Tec wrap specifically to shed moisture rather than absorb it. It carries the same AVID shaft performance as the rest of the line, the construction AZBilliards players describe as a step up from Cuetec's older fiberglass-coated shafts, though opinion on exactly how much of an improvement remains split, so it's worth judging the shaft by how it plays for you rather than by the coating description alone. If Opt-X's performance eventually has you looking at Cuetec's top tier, Cynergy is the step up: an all carbon fiber cue and shaft developed with the direction of Shane Van Boening, who has represented Cuetec since his debut at the 2009 BCA Expo in Las Vegas.

Warranty and what to know before you buy

Opt-X carries Cuetec's Limited Lifetime Warranty once registered on Cuetec's website within 60 days of purchase, bought from an authorized dealer, and only for the original purchaser, since the warranty isn't transferable. It covers manufacturing and material defects, including warpage, which Cuetec checks by sighting the cue rather than rolling it on a flat surface, but not tips, ferrules, rubber bumpers, finish or wrap material, and modifying or abusing the cue voids it. Warranty claims do not go straight to Cuetec or Imperial International; Cuetec's warranty page directs buyers to file through the selling dealer instead, since Imperial International handles U.S. defect resolution as Cuetec's agent. Because tips, ferrules and wrap material sit outside the warranty, expect Opt-X's Leather-Tec wrap and Tiger Everest tip to need eventual replacement as normal wear rather than a covered defect.

If Opt-X isn't the right fit, Cuetec's Sell Through Guarantee lets you return an unchalked, unused, non-shelf-worn current model for credit toward what you paid or a same-value replacement.

What players say

Opt-X uses the same AVID glass-composite shaft that splits opinion on AZBilliards. Some longtime players question the "fiberglass" description since it recalls Cuetec's older shaft coatings, while others who've played a current AVID shaft say the finish feels thinner and slicker than the old coating and performs well for the price, the same shaft underneath Opt-X's graphic forearm.
