4.9/5 average from 37 customer reviews across Cuetec AVID Chroma Cues.
AVID Chroma takes Cuetec's AVID platform and builds it around eight solid, vivid forearm colors instead of the traditional cue points or wood veneers Cuetec uses elsewhere in the line. It sits inside the broader AVID lineup, one step up from Cuetec's original 1989 idea of cladding a maple core in a composite shell, updated with a modern glass-bonded shaft. We stock all 8 Chroma colorways, Bordeaux, Crimson, Mojave, Sage, Currency, Highlands, Hydra and Abyss, all currently in stock, each priced at about $290.
Cuetec's engineers built the AVID platform, and every colorway in the Chroma series, on the same idea the company started with in 1989: reinforcing a maple core with an outer composite layer, an approach Taiwanese engineer Jones Chang first adapted from tennis racket manufacturing. AVID updates that original concept with a patent-pending glass-bonded ply layup rather than the single fiberglass shell Cuetec used on its first eight cues.
Quarter King Billiards is an authorized Cuetec dealer, which is what makes every Chroma cue we sell eligible for Cuetec's manufacturer warranty once it's registered. Cuetec's exclusive U.S. partner, Imperial International, has handled that warranty administration and dealer network since 2006.
Every Chroma cue ships with the player's choice of an 11.75mm, 12.25mm or 12.75mm AVID glass-bonded low-deflection shaft. That shaft is built from multiple thin plies, about .75mm each, of glass composite bonded to A-grade, kiln-dried hard maple, a patent-pending process Cuetec designed to raise the shaft's dynamic stiffness while keeping the feel and feedback of a wood shaft. Every Chroma cue we carry is tagged at the 12.75mm option, Cuetec's largest AVID diameter, in Cuetec's Fiberglass (glass-bonded maple) shaft-type category.
Underneath the glass-bonded ply layup, the AVID shaft uses what Cuetec calls an Air Light front-end, bored out more than 10 inches from the tip. Removing that much material cuts mass out of the section of the shaft that actually drives squirt, the sideways cue-ball deflection you get from an off-center hit. Less front-end mass generally means less deflection on the same stroke.
The Chroma butt is built from kiln-dried, vacuum-sealed maple and finished with a bumper designed to accept Cuetec's Duo Extension accessory, so you can add a rear extension without modifying the cue itself.
Chroma also carries Cuetec's second-generation Acueweight system, a fused butt cap design that opens up more cavity space than earlier Cuetec balance systems, so you can add spacer weights to move the balance point without a gunsmith-style bolt or a proprietary tool.
Based on our own catalog specs for AVID cues at this shaft diameter, Chroma pairs a 12.75mm Tiger Everest tip with a thin, white sighting ferrule, the combination Cuetec uses across most of its 12.75mm AVID shafts, and a stainless steel collar at the shaft-to-butt joint.
Every AVID cue, Chroma included, is built on what Cuetec calls the Level-Line butt taper, a taper profile the company engineered specifically for the AVID platform rather than carrying over an existing Cynergy or legacy taper. Cuetec designed the whole AVID package, from the shaft's laminated tip to the Level-Line taper, with the stated goal of exceeding the performance of cues that cost significantly more. Cuetec's engineers describe the philosophy behind the platform bluntly: every component, from the shaft's laminated tip to its patent-pending low-deflection construction to the Level-Line taper, was built to exceed player expectations rather than hit a price target.
All 8 colorways share identical specs, the only difference is the forearm finish: Bordeaux (CTAC1), Crimson (CTAC2), Mojave (CTAC3), Sage (CTAC4), Currency (CTAC5), Highlands (CTAC6), Hydra (CTAC7) and Abyss (CTAC8). Our own color-attribute tagging groups those eight finishes into four families, 3 in Green, 2 in Blue, 2 in Red and 1 in Tan, which is useful if you're filtering by color rather than shopping by the marketing name.
If Chroma's solid colors aren't your style, Cuetec builds three other AVID series on the same shaft platform. The AVID Era series trades Chroma's bold colorways for a traditional sneaky-pete look in kiln-dried, vacuum-sealed maple. The AVID Opt-X series goes the opposite direction with intricate forearm graphics designed to create an illusion of depth, wrapped in a moisture-shedding Leather-Tec grip. The AVID Proof series, developed with pro player Skyler Woodward, is styled around Kentucky bluegrass instruments and bourbon-cask oak. All four run the same player's-choice AVID shaft diameters and the same Acueweight system, so the decision between them is mostly about look rather than performance. If you want a dedicated break or jump cue built on the same AVID engineering, the AVID Surge series covers that role instead of a playing cue.
Chroma's price reflects where AVID sits in Cuetec's overall lineup. Across the Cuetec AVID cues we carry, prices run from about $260 up to about $450; step up to the Cynergy platform and pricing runs from about $500 up to about $1,440. The difference isn't just price: Cynergy skips the glass-bonded maple shaft entirely in favor of an all carbon fiber composite build, engineered and manufactured inside Cuetec's own Advanced Composites Division and developed with the input and direction of five-time U.S. Open champion Shane Van Boening. Cuetec markets its Cynergy shaft as the first carbon fiber playing shaft to capture a Men's WPA world title. Cuetec's own marketing describes the AVID platform's goal in blunt terms: performance that "exceeds those of cues costing hundreds, if not thousands of dollars more." That's the company's claim about its own product rather than an independent test, but it explains why AVID exists as a separate line instead of a cheaper Cynergy trim.
Cuetec's own spec sheets list China as the country of origin for Chroma and the rest of the AVID line, a fact that doesn't affect warranty coverage, which follows the cue rather than the factory.
Every Chroma cue we carry uses the 21.3mm variant of the 3/8x14 joint pin, matched to a 12.75mm shaft in Cuetec's fiberglass, glass-bonded maple construction, and none of the 8 carry a wrap, all are wrapless. If you like Chroma's shaft feel but want a different butt, or you're replacing a worn shaft, Cuetec sells the same AVID shaft family separately in our shafts category.
Chroma suits a player who wants AVID's glass-bonded shaft with a distinct, single-color look rather than the traditional points and veneers Cuetec uses on its other AVID series. Cuetec's broader reputation here is built on two things: the original 1989 fiberglass and graphite-clad cue construction that started the company, and, more recently, a value-priced low-deflection shaft family that AZBilliards players have compared favorably to costlier maple low-deflection shafts. Because Cuetec prices every Chroma colorway the same, picking between the eight finishes comes down to which one you like, not a spec or budget trade-off. If Chroma's performance leaves you wanting to move up the Cuetec range later, the Cynergy platform is the next step up, at roughly double Chroma's price and built entirely from carbon fiber composite rather than glass-bonded maple.
Chroma carries Cuetec's Limited Lifetime Warranty, but it only applies once you register the cue on Cuetec's website within 60 days of purchase, buy it from an authorized Cuetec dealer, and remain the original purchaser, the warranty isn't transferable if you sell the cue later. It covers manufacturing and material defects, including warpage, which Cuetec checks by sighting the cue rather than rolling it, but it excludes normal wear items like tips, ferrules, rubber bumpers, finish and wrap material, and modifying or abusing the cue voids it.
Warranty claims start with your dealer rather than with Cuetec or Imperial International directly, Cuetec's agent for warranty administration in the United States. If you decide Chroma isn't for you down the line, Cuetec's separate Sell Through Guarantee lets you return an unchalked, unused, non-shelf-worn current model for credit toward what you paid or a same-value replacement.
Chroma runs the same AVID glass-composite shaft that draws a mixed reaction on AZBilliards. Some longtime players are skeptical of a "fiberglass" shaft description because it recalls Cuetec's older, less-loved coated shafts, and question whether adding a stiffer outer layer lines up with typical low-deflection shaft theory. Other posters who've actually played a current AVID shaft describe the coating as thinner and slicker than the old finish and say it plays well for the price, the same construction underneath every Chroma colorway.

The joint is what decides whether a shaft fits, and every cue in Cuetec AVID Chroma Cues uses the 3/8X14 21.3mm (Cynergy) pin. Match that pin on any replacement shaft, or ask us and we will confirm the fit.
Every Chroma cue we carry ships with a 12.75mm AVID glass-bonded low-deflection shaft, though Cuetec also offers 11.75mm and 12.25mm options on the platform.
We stock all 8: Bordeaux, Crimson, Mojave, Sage, Currency, Highlands, Hydra and Abyss, all in stock and identically priced.
No. All 8 Chroma cues we carry are wrapless, relying on the shaft's grip and the maple butt finish instead of a leather or linen wrap.
Yes, under Cuetec's Limited Lifetime Warranty, but you must register it on Cuetec's site within 60 days of buying it from an authorized dealer.
