About Meucci Power Piston Cues

About Meucci

Bob Meucci started hand-building cues in 1960 out of his father's tool-and-die shop near Chicago, and the company took its present form in 1975 when Meucci Originals, Inc. opened in Olive Branch, Mississippi. Since 2006 the shop has run out of Byhalia, Mississippi, roughly 30 minutes from Memphis. Collectors also trace a still earlier Meucci company, B.M.C. (Bob Meucci Customs), formed in Glenview, Illinois, in 1969, before the modern Meucci Originals brand launched in 1975, and Bob Meucci was individually inducted into the International Cuemakers Hall of Fame in 2006 for pioneering high-precision metal-lathe cuemaking. Bob Meucci handed off day-to-day ownership in 2022 and continues as a designer and brand ambassador while a newer generation of cuemakers runs daily production. Meucci makes every cue, Power Piston included, in the USA.

Technology, in Plain English

The Pro Shaft

Both cues in the Power Piston line ship with the Classic Wood Pro Shaft at 12.50mm. Meucci describes this shaft as a single piece of solid hard rock maple with a 14-inch Pro Taper, designed for low effective deflection so the tip stays on line under english.

The Power-Piston Forearm

The line's name comes from its forearm design. Meucci's own copy for the Power Piston 2 describes "a well-engineered cue with 4 bold maple points on a black power piston backdrop," finished with a black pressed Irish linen wrap flecked in white and a black composite butt sleeve set between two German nickel-silver rings.

The Kielwood Upgrade Path

Meucci also builds a Kielwood version of the Pro Shaft for players who want a stiffer hit in the same low-deflection design. It uses hard maple that has gone through torrefaction, which Meucci says gives it superior strength and a firmer feel than the standard Pro Shaft used on both Power Piston cues we stock.

The Lineup

MEP02 Power Piston 2, about $735

MEP02 is Meucci's Power Piston 2. Meucci describes it as "a well-engineered cue with 4 bold maple points on a black power piston backdrop," with a black pressed Irish linen wrap flecked in white and a black composite butt sleeve between two German nickel-silver rings.

MEP04 Power Piston, about $1,220

MEP04 is the higher-priced build in the line, at about $1,220 and roughly $485 above the MEP02. It shares the same 5/16x18 joint and 12.50mm Classic Wood shaft as MEP02. Only one of the two Power Piston cues currently shows in stock.

The Models We Carry

MEP02 Power Piston 2, about $740

MEP02 pairs an ebony-stained maple forearm with four birdseye maple points inside a thick black collar and a silver ring, carried into a matching ebony-stained butt sleeve with a birdseye maple collar between two silver rings, and closed off with a white composite butt plate carrying the Meucci logo in black. Meucci's own description calls it a well-engineered cue with four bold maple points on a black Power Piston backdrop. It ships on the 12.50mm Classic Wood Pro Shaft, a 1/2 inch hydraulic ferrule, a 12.5mm Ultra Skin Medium tip and the 5/16x18 joint. Full detail is on the Meucci MEP02 Power Piston cue page.

MEP04 is built around an imitation-ivory composite forearm with floating cocobolo points accented by mother-of-pearl inlays, a design carried into a matching ivory-composite butt sleeve with intricate cocobolo and mother-of-pearl inlay work and cocobolo rings, finished with a cream butt plate. It uses the same shaft, ferrule, tip and joint spec as MEP02. Meucci currently sells this same design in four colorways, Blue, Red, Green and Cocobolo, on its own site. See the Meucci MEP04 Power Piston cue listing for current stock.

Joint, Shaft, and Compatibility

Both Power Piston cues use the 5/16x18 wood-to-wood joint and a 12.50mm Classic Wood shaft, the same spec used across most of the Meucci catalog we stock: 49 of 54 products on the 5/16x18 joint, 43 on the 12.50mm shaft. Both ship with a Linen Wrap handle, with finish colors running brown, black, white, and tan across the two models. See the 5/16x18 joint and 12.50mm shaft pages, or our shafts category for spares and upgrades in this size.

Materials and Construction, Explained

The Power Piston forearm itself is not a solid wood piece the way a standard forearm is. Meucci's own description of the design is a thin sleeve of high-impact plastic material fitted over a maple dowel, finished in an ivory or black color depending on the model, and the company markets that plastic sleeve as the source of the line's name and its claimed low-effort hit.

Cocobolo, used for the points and inlay work on MEP04, is a dense, oil-rich tropical hardwood cuemakers reach for when they want a warm reddish-brown grain pattern that takes a high polish, and its natural oil content is part of why it is a common choice for inlay accents rather than an entire forearm. Mother-of-pearl, set into the MEP04 points and sleeve, is the iridescent inner shell layer from certain mollusks, prized in cue inlay work for the same shifting color under light that makes it a longtime standard in decorative cuemaking.

Both Power Piston cues use Meucci's Everlock weight system and a 1/2 inch hydraulic ferrule ahead of a 12.5mm Ultra Skin Medium tip, the same components Meucci fits to most of its production cues, and both wrap in Irish linen, pressed on MEP02 and coated on MEP04, the pressed finish giving a slightly firmer, less textured grip than the urethane-coated version. See our cue glossary for more on these terms.

The German nickel-silver rings framing MEP02's forearm and sleeve are a metal alloy, not a precious metal despite the name, chosen by cuemakers because it takes a bright, tarnish-resistant polish and machines into thin decorative rings without the cost of true silver. Rings like these do double duty on a production cue: they mark a clean visual break between wood sections and reinforce the glue joint where the forearm meets the collar.

Who It Suits

Meucci's own marketing for the brand centers on a smoother, lower-effort hit, describing it as "just a natural transfer of energy that lets you do more with less strain," and crediting the combination of its wood-to-wood joint, Pro Shaft, and lightweight ferrule. A player drawn to the Power Piston's bold-point forearm who already likes, or wants to try, that traditional Meucci feel is the target buyer here. The line spans a wide price gap for just two models against an overall Meucci price band in our catalog of about $175 up to about $1,520 with a median near $950.

Warranty and What to Know Before You Buy

Meucci's warranty on this line, as on every cue it sells, is a Limited 1-Year Manufacturer Warranty from the date of purchase, covering manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship. Meucci repairs, replaces, or refunds a covered claim at its own discretion, and the warranty covers only the original purchaser with proof of purchase; it does not transfer if the cue changes hands. It excludes warping in wood components, ordinary wear on the tip, ferrule, finish, wrap, and bumper, and any damage from misuse, accidents, or unauthorized modification. Because counterfeit Meucci cues circulate in the market, Meucci tells buyers the safest path is a direct factory purchase or an Authorized Dealer. Quarter King Billiards is an authorized Meucci dealer, so Power Piston cues bought here register through Meucci's dealer-warranty portal.

What Players Say

Meucci's current Pro Team, per its own site, includes Tyler Styer, Billy Thorpe, Tony Chohan, Kaylee McIntosh Driskell, LoreeJon Brown, Mike Massey, Corey Deuel, Eric Roberts, and Jonathan Pinegar, a roster the brand promotes across its whole catalog rather than the Power Piston line specifically. Meucci's shaft feel draws mixed opinions on the AZBilliards forums: some players like its traditional, slightly softer character next to modern ultra-low-deflection shafts, while others who have switched to stiffer carbon builds say the Meucci hit isn't for them. A handful of threads also raise concerns about build-quality consistency compared with Meucci's earlier decades. This reflects player opinion online, not a manufacturer statement.

The Power Piston name itself has been debated on the AZBilliards forums for years. One widely shared post reproduced Meucci's own technical explanation of the design, a plastic sleeve over a maple dowel said to cut cue-ball deflection by 7 to 10 percent compared with other Meucci cues and let a player generate more power with less effort. Several posters pushed back hard on that framing, calling it marketing language for a plastic component, while one professional cue repairer offered a more mechanical explanation, suggesting any perceived spring effect comes from the ferrule compressing on impact rather than from the plastic sleeve itself. Long-time Meucci owners in that same discussion were more evenly split, with some saying the flex makes hard power shots harder to control and others saying it rewards a smoother, finesse-based stroke.
