Pechauer JP Series Cues

Pechauer's JP Series is the brand's accessible line, 24 cues running from about $320 to about $630, each one built with the same Speed Joint, maple shaft and Jade Medium tip standard across every model in the series. Pechauer positions the JP Series as carrying every construction feature of a full Pechauer cue, just without the exotic-wood and hand-signature upgrades reserved for the Pro Series, and with weights and stain colors still fully customizable. Below is how these cues are built, what the wrap and finish options look like across the 24 models, and what the Pechauer warranty covers if you buy one.

Every item is brand new and 100% genuine, backed by its full manufacturer warranty. Free shipping on orders over $98 (contiguous US) and 30-day returns. Every spec on this page is checked against the manufacturer's published data by our Wilmington, NC store team.

About Pechauer JP Series Cues

About the JP Series

The JP Series is where Pechauer starts its lineup. According to the manufacturer, every JP Series cue "incorporates all construction features of a Pechauer cue" at a lower price than the Pro Series, with weights and stain colors fully customizable, which is Pechauer's own framing for the line rather than a marketing label we're adding on top. In practice that means a JP Series buyer is not getting a stripped-down cue, just a cue without the exotic-wood forearms, extra inlay work and hand-signature that push the Pro Series higher in price.

That approach fits with how Pechauer has built cues generally since 1963, when founder Jerry Pechauer completed his first one in Green Bay, Wisconsin, a business his son Joe has run as President since 2007 and that the family still owns outright today, with no parent company disclosed. The workshop behind every JP Series cue sits at 4140 Velp Ave in Green Bay, the same address Pechauer has worked from as the company grew from Jerry's first cue in 1963 into the three-generation operation it is today. The company has also picked up industry recognition over the years, including Cue of the Year in 2013, 2015 and 2017, and induction into the International Cuemakers Hall of Fame for both Jerry and Joseph Pechauer, the same standard the JP Series is held to despite its lower price point. That same workshop has attracted professional players over the decades, including historic relationships with world champion Oliver Ortmann and 17-time World Trick Shot Champion Paul Gerni, evidence of a build standard that runs through the whole catalog, JP Series included. Every JP Series cue we carry is handcrafted in that same Green Bay workshop, from wood hand-picked in the north woods of Michigan.

What comes standard

Speed Joint and maple shaft

All 24 JP Series cues we carry run Pechauer's proprietary Speed Joint and a 12.75mm classic wood maple shaft, no exceptions in this series. Per Pechauer, every JP Series cue comes standard with a maple shaft finished with the Pechauer Jade Medium tip. The shaft itself follows Pechauer's usual construction, 29 inches of hard rock maple cut to a 10 to 12-inch pro taper, and the ferrule underneath the tip is Juma, a dense phenolic material Pechauer uses across most of its line. The Speed Joint is Pechauer's own proprietary design, not licensed from an outside supplier, though the company will build to a Radial, Uniloc or other pin if you request a different fit at the time of order. Where the Pro Series leans toward Pechauer's Piloted Speed Joint, every JP Series cue we carry uses the standard version instead, one more construction difference between the two series beyond wood and price. Although none of the 24 JP Series cues in our current stock use anything other than the standard Speed Joint, Pechauer's broader catalog does include a few Uni-Loc and Radial cues for buyers who want a different pin from the outset.

Tip and ferrule

The Jade Medium tip that comes standard on every JP Series cue sits on top of a Juma ferrule, the phenolic-type material Pechauer uses across most of its shafts, typically in a 5/8-inch size. It's the same tip and ferrule combination used across the bulk of the Pechauer lineup, not a lower-grade version reserved for the entry series.

Full customization on weight, stain and wrap

Pechauer's own description of the JP Series calls out full customization across "our full selection of stain colors, most inlay options, and all available wraps." Among the 24 cues we stock, 22 come finished in a linen wrap and 2 are wrapless, meaning the grip section is a bare or stained maple forearm instead of a wound wrap. The 2 wrapless cues in the series are not left bare, either: Pechauer finishes a wrapless JP Series grip in a stain such as purple or leaves it a natural, non-stained maple, the same finish options used across the brand's wrapless models generally. Stain colors in stock run across tan, black, brown, blue, grey and several less common shades, which lines up with Pechauer's claim that the series is customizable rather than limited to one or two finishes. Most models also use Pechauer's changeable weight bolt system, so a JP Series cue can be fine-tuned in balance without buying a second cue; across the Pechauer catalog, 57 of 81 spec'd models use this changeable weight system and 7 do not, and the JP Series draws from the same parts bin as the rest of the lineup.

Colors across the JP Series

Color-wise, tan is the most common finish among the 24 JP Series cues, 13 of them, followed by blue and brown at 6 each, black and grey at 5 each, and smaller runs in purple, red, green and pink. That mix roughly tracks the brand-wide pattern across all 58 Pechauer products we carry, where tan (30), black (19) and brown (16) are the three most common finishes overall. As with the rest of the Pechauer catalog, a single cue can carry more than one of these colors across its forearm and butt sleeve, so the counts reflect color tagging rather than 24 mutually exclusive options. That range of available stains is part of what Pechauer means when it describes the JP Series as fully customizable on weight and stain color, rather than a line built around one default finish.

The lineup by price

Within the series, the 24 cues span about $320 up to about $630, with a median around $486. Examples across that spread include the JP2504 and JP2505 at $396, the JP2509 at $441, the JP2513 at $486, the JP2514 at $495, the JP2516 at $522, the JP2520 at $612, and the JP2523 at the top of the range at $630. That spread mostly reflects the inlay and stain work on each cue rather than any change in the underlying construction, since every model in the series shares the same Speed Joint, shaft and tip.

Joint, shaft and compatibility

Every JP Series cue runs the Speed Joint, Pechauer's own proprietary pin, so a JP Series cue calls for a Pechauer shaft or a shaft cut to that same pin spec rather than a shaft built for another brand's joint. All 24 also share a 12.75mm classic wood maple shaft as standard. Wraps split between linen wrap and wrapless as noted above. If you're shopping for a replacement or backup shaft to go with a JP Series cue, our shafts category covers options across the brands we carry.

Who it suits

Every cue in the JP Series is built as a playing cue, none of them a dedicated break or jump model, which fits the series' role as Pechauer's everyday, full-feature entry point rather than a specialty line. None of the 24 JP Series cues are set up as break or jump cues; Pechauer builds those as separate models elsewhere in its lineup, built on a different, straight-taper shaft rather than the JP Series' 10 to 12-inch pro taper. Pechauer's own positioning frames the JP Series for players who want the full Pechauer build and customization at a more accessible price than the Pro Series, without paying for the exotic woods and hand-signature that come with that step up. If your budget or preference points toward that next tier, the Pro Series runs the same core construction with select maple and exotic woods, hand-signed by Joseph Pechauer.

Warranty and what to know before you buy

Every Pechauer cue, JP Series included, carries the same coverage: a non-transferable lifetime warranty to the original purchaser against defects in material and workmanship on cues bought new after January 1, 2006. It excludes broken cues, broken or cracked butt caps, and normal wear items like the tip, finish and wrap, and coverage is void if the cue has been abused, mishandled, altered, or damaged by extreme heat or humidity. Warpage is covered separately, for one year from purchase to the original owner with a receipt; past that year Pechauer will still look at and repair a warped cue but will not warranty warpage caused by environmental conditions. As with the rest of the Pechauer line, JP Series cues do not ship standard with a case or joint protector, so plan on those as separate purchases.

What players say

Community discussion of Pechauer generally, including entry-priced models like the JP Series, tends to circle back to the same point on the AZBilliards forums: the proprietary Speed Joint can make it harder to fit a shaft from another cue brand, though Pechauer will build to a different pin, such as a Uniloc or Radial, if you ask for it at the time of order. Outside that one recurring caveat, the consensus in the same discussions is that Pechauer's build quality holds up at this end of its price range just as it does higher up in the Pro Series.
