Pechauer Cues

Pechauer's cue lineup here runs 50 models, split between the JP Series and the Pro Series, priced from about $180 up to about $1,170. Every one of them comes out of the same Green Bay, Wisconsin workshop Pechauer has run since the 1960s, built on the company's own Speed Joint by default and finished in either a linen wrap or left wrapless with a stained maple grip. Below, we walk through how a Pechauer cue is put together, what separates the JP Series from the Pro Series, the joint and shaft specs behind the numbers, and what the warranty covers before you commit to one.

Every item is brand new and 100% genuine, backed by its full manufacturer warranty. Free shipping on orders over $98 (contiguous US) and 30-day returns. Every spec on this page is checked against the manufacturer's published data by our Wilmington, NC store team.

About Pechauer Cues

Why choose a Pechauer cue

Pechauer has been building complete cues since 1963, when founder Jerry Pechauer finished his first one after teaching himself the trade repairing a broken Willie Hoppe cue he'd won in a wagered match two years earlier. The company still builds every cue by hand in Green Bay, Wisconsin, from wood hand-picked in the north woods of Michigan, and it is still run by the Pechauer family, now three generations in with Joe Pechauer as President since 2007.

That continuity shows up in the awards column too: Cue of the Year in 2013, 2015 and 2017, and induction into the International Cuemakers Hall of Fame for both Jerry and Joseph Pechauer. None of the 50 Pechauer cues on this page are one-off show pieces. They are production cues built to the same construction standard from a $324 JP Series cue up through an $1,170 Pro Series piece. In 2008, the company also partnered with NFL quarterback Brett Favre on a charity drive that raised fifty thousand dollars, one more marker of a business that has stayed active in its community well beyond just building cues.

How a Pechauer cue is built

The Pechauer Speed Joint

34 of the 50 Pechauer cues here use the standard Speed Joint, Pechauer's own proprietary pin, and another 16 use the Piloted version of it, concentrated in the higher-end Pro Series. Pechauer designs and builds the Speed Joint itself rather than licensing an outside system, and while it isn't interchangeable with shafts built for a different brand's pin, Pechauer will build a cue to a Radial, Uniloc, 3/8x10, 5/16x14 or other pin if you request it when ordering.

Maple shafts, with a carbon option

49 of the 50 Pechauer cues we carry ship on a classic wood maple shaft and 1 on carbon fiber. The wood shafts follow Pechauer's standard build, 29-inch hard rock maple with a 10 to 12-inch pro taper, topped with a 12.75mm or 13.00mm Pechauer Jade Medium tip depending on the model. For players who want to go low-deflection without switching shaft feel entirely, Pechauer's Performance Plus shaft laminates 12 pieces of hard rock maple, cut and kiln-dried in-house, to cut deflection while keeping a maple hit. The carbon route is the Rogue 2, built with an enhanced outer carbon layer for a smoother finish and made roughly 20% stiffer than the original Rogue for a firmer, more consistent hit.

Ferrules and finish details

Across the Pechauer spec sheet, ferrules are almost always Juma, a dense phenolic material, in 5/8-inch or 1-inch sizes depending on the model, with a thin white ferrule used on a handful of cues instead. Forearms and butt sleeves are maple, sometimes left natural and sometimes stained, and the higher-end models add ebony-framed pearl or ivory point inlays. 38 of the 50 cues here are finished in a linen wrap and 12 are wrapless, meaning the grip section is a bare or stained maple forearm rather than a wound wrap. Inlay work ranges from a plain natural-stained forearm through carbon-stained maple forearms with ebony-framed pearl points, ebony-stained figured maple butt sleeves, and on the most detailed models, chestnut-stained maple with ebony-framed pearl inlay or butt sleeves finished in ebony with pink and pearl accents. Tips follow a similar range: the 12.75mm Jade Medium is standard, Gold Medium covers the 11.80mm and 12.40mm shaft sizes, a Gold Break Tip goes on the dedicated break cues, and a 10-layered Jade or Tiger Emerald tip appears on select higher-end models in place of the single-layer standard.

The lineup: JP Series and Pro Series

Pechauer JP Series cues

The 24 cues in the JP Series run from about $320 to about $630, and Pechauer positions the line as its accessible entry point: every JP Series cue carries the same construction features as the rest of the Pechauer lineup, just at a lower price, with weights and stain colors fully customizable. Each one comes standard with a maple shaft and Pechauer's Jade Medium tip.

Pechauer Pro Series cues

The 21 cues in the Pro Series run from about $360 to about $1,170. Pechauer markets this as its elegance tier, crafted from select maple and exotic woods and hand-signed by Joseph Pechauer, with a Jade Medium tip standard and a soft or hard tip available on request. It's the line where the piloted Speed Joint shows up most often. The two series also diverge on which version of the Speed Joint they use: every JP Series cue we carry runs the standard Speed Joint, while the Pro Series leans toward the Piloted version, 15 of its 21 cues, with only 6 on the standard pin. That split is one more way the Pro Series distinguishes itself from the JP Series beyond wood selection and price.

Joint, shaft and compatibility

Putting the numbers together: 34 of our 50 Pechauer cues run the standard Speed Joint and 16 the Piloted version, all told a proprietary pin Pechauer does not license out, so a Pechauer cue generally needs a Pechauer shaft or a shaft built to spec for that pin. Shaft size is just as concentrated, 45 cues at 12.75mm and 5 at 13.00mm, and shaft type runs 49 classic wood to 1 carbon fiber. If you want a replacement or upgrade shaft, our shafts category covers options across every brand we stock, not only Pechauer, and if you'd rather compare joint pins directly, the Uni-Loc and Radial pages show what else is out there. Wrapless Pechauer cues aren't left plain, either: the grip section on these models is typically finished in a stain such as purple or blue, or left as a natural, non-stained maple, matching the stain options offered on the wrapped models.

Colors and stain options

Among the 50 Pechauer cues we carry, tan is the most common finish at 30 cues, followed by black at 19, brown at 16, blue at 10, grey at 9, green at 4, red at 3, purple at 2 and pink at 1. Because a single cue can carry more than one stain across its forearm, wrap and butt sleeve, these numbers reflect color tagging across the catalog rather than 50 mutually exclusive options, but they give a sense of how far Pechauer's customization runs beyond the standard natural maple look.

Who it suits and how it plays

45 of the 50 Pechauer cues here are built as straight playing cues, with 4 dedicated break cues, the JPBRKEB, JPBRKNA and JPBRKRS among them, and 1 jump cue, the JPJMP. That mix tells you Pechauer's core business is the playing cue, with a handful of purpose-built break and jump options for players who want a matched set from the same maker rather than mixing brands. The break and jump models are also built differently under the hood: Pechauer's Rogue Carbon Fiber break shaft uses a modified straight taper rather than the 10 to 12-inch pro taper on its playing shafts, aimed at a harder, more direct hit for the opening break rather than the playability a pro taper gives you through a rack. If you're comparing Pechauer against other performance-tier cues before deciding, our McDermott and Lucasi categories sit in the same tier and are worth a look.

Warranty and what to know before you buy

Since January 1, 2006, every new Pechauer cue has carried a non-transferable lifetime warranty to the original purchaser against defects in material and workmanship. It excludes broken cues, broken or cracked butt caps, and normal wear items such as the tip, finish and wrap, and coverage is void if the cue has been abused, mishandled, altered, or damaged by extreme heat or humidity. Warpage is covered separately and only for one year from purchase, for the original owner with a receipt; after that year Pechauer will still assess and repair a warped cue but will not warranty environmental warpage.

Two things worth knowing before you order: most of the cues on Pechauer's spec sheet, 57 of 81 catalogued models, use a changeable weight bolt system, and none of them ship standard with a case or joint protector, so plan on buying those separately. Every model on that spec sheet, all 81 of them, also lists the USA as its country of origin, in keeping with the Green Bay-only production described above.

What players say

On the AZBilliards forums, the recurring conversation around Pechauer cues centers on that Speed Joint pin: some players find it limits how easily you can fit a shaft from another brand, while others in the same threads point out that Pechauer will build to a different pin on request if that matters to you. Past that one point, the consistent theme in forum discussion is that build quality holds steady across the price range, from JP Series up through Pro Series.

What Pechauer is known for

Pechauer is an American cue maker based in Green Bay, Wisconsin, run by the Pechauer family since Jerry Pechauer built his first cue in 1963, now led by his son Joe. The company builds cues largely in-house, including its own patented quick-release joint and shaft insert, and seasons its own birdseye and curly maple. Pechauer sells at real production volume rather than one-off custom-shop quantities, spanning affordable JP Series playing cues up through hand-signed Pro Series cues and limited 50-piece Camelot III and Champions Collection runs tied to players like April Larson and David Alcaide. Quarter King stocks the JP and Pro Series, the bulk of Pechauer's catalog, running about $180 to $1,170. Buyers are typically league players and collectors who want an American-made cue with a lifetime warranty and real customization rather than a decal-wrapped import.

We currently stock 50 Pechauer items, from $180 to $1,170.

What joint does Pechauer use, and which shafts fit?

About 69% of the Pechauer cues we stock use the Pechauer Speed Joint joint. The joint is what decides shaft fitment — thread and face both have to match, so a shaft cut for a different pin will not thread on no matter how good it is.

Shafts that fit most Pechauer cues

Pechauer technology, in plain English

Quick-Release Joint & Shaft Insert
Pechauer's own patented joint pin and insert, machined and installed in-house rather than sourced from an outside parts supplier.
Rogue 2 Carbon Fiber Shaft
Pechauer's current low-deflection carbon shaft, guaranteed straight on arrival and covered by its own lifetime defect warranty (separate from the cue's warranty).
Weight Forward Technology / Flex-Free MST Taper
Used on Pechauer's break cues to shift mass forward for a harder, more controlled break hit.
Pechauer Jade Tip
Pechauer's house-brand leather tip, shipped standard on JP and Pro Series cues in a medium hardness.

What players say about Pechauer

Consistently praised for

  • Owners consistently single out the low-deflection Rogue shaft as playing as well as or better than other brands' carbon shafts.
  • The in-house quick-release joint gets credited with a solid, dead-center hit rather than a hollow or springy feel.
  • Buyers who've had cues built or serviced describe the customer service as personal and responsive for a company this size.
  • The exotic-wood point work on Pro Series and Limited Edition cues is regularly called out as a lot of cue for the price versus full custom shops.
  • League players like that weights, stains, and wraps are genuinely configurable rather than a fixed catalog SKU.

Common criticisms

  • JP Series cues are plain by design - simple stains and minimal points - so shoppers expecting inlay work need to move up to Pro Series or Limited Edition.
  • Warranty service requires shipping the cue back to Green Bay at the owner's expense (about $30), which is slower and costlier than a local dealer swap.
  • Camelot III and Champions Collection runs are capped at 50 pieces, so specific designs sell out and aren't reliably restocked.
  • Pechauer came to low-deflection shaft technology later than Predator, so its carbon shaft doesn't have the same multi-decade track record.

Also worth a look at this price

If you like where Pechauer sits on price but want to compare before you commit, these land in the same range:

  • Predator — the low-deflection shaft pioneer if that's the deciding feature
  • McDermott — larger US production run with a wider price ladder and more dealer support

Frequently asked questions about Pechauer Cues

What joint does a Pechauer pool cue use?

Most run Pechauer's proprietary Speed Joint, 34 of the 50 cues we carry, with another 16 on the Piloted version. Pechauer will build to a Radial, Uniloc or other pin on request.

What's the difference between the JP Series and Pro Series?

JP Series is Pechauer's accessible entry line with full customization at a lower price. Pro Series adds select exotic woods and Joseph Pechauer's personal hand-signature at a higher price point.

What shaft size do Pechauer cues come in?

45 of the 50 Pechauer cues we stock use a 12.75mm shaft, with 5 at 13.00mm. Nearly all are classic wood maple, with one carbon fiber option.

Do Pechauer cues come with a lifetime warranty?

Yes, cues bought new after January 1, 2006 carry a non-transferable lifetime warranty against material and workmanship defects, though broken cues and normal wear items are excluded.

Does Pechauer make break and jump cues?

Yes. Alongside 45 playing cues, we carry 4 dedicated Pechauer break cues and 1 jump cue, the JPJMP, built to the same standard as the rest of the line.
